Grateful Patient Makes $1 Million Donation
in Honour of Mental Health Awareness
The Markham Stouffville Hospital Foundation announced its most recent $1 million gift in support of the hospital’s much needed expansion. In honour and recognition of this generous donation, the hospital will be naming an area in Mental Health the “Deborah Rotta-Loria & Family Child & Adolescent Day Hospital.” Markham Stouffville Hospital’s Child & Adolescent Mental Health Day Hospital is a unique program designed in partnership with the York Region School Board. It will help youth ages 12 to 18, who are not attending school or only partially attending school due to anxiety and depression. The program is slated to begin in September 2013 and will be housed in the new building at Markham Stouffville Hospital, currently under construction.

Markham Stouffville Hospital Expansion
The Miles family has lived in Markham for more than four generations supporting the community for over 40 years. Now, they are once again demonstrating their commitment with their gift of $1,000,000 to the hospital. Mayor Frank Scarpitti, Campaign Co- Chair and Suzette Strong, CEO Markham Stouffville Hospital Foundation joined the Miles family in celebrating this important milestone for the largest fundraising campaign in York Region.
“We had our own personal experience with Markham Stouffville Hospital and know the importance of a great community hospital close by. This hospital has helped our family and will help many other families in the future, that is the reason we have given towards its expansion,” says Elson Miles.
“Some people think that hospitals are made of concrete, glass and steel. Not so. Hospitals are built with caring and compassionate people. Like our physicians, nurses and people like Elson and Joyce,” says Suzette Strong. “Thank you so much you for being an important part of our hospital’s success, at the beginning, today and in our future.”
Mark Lievonen appointed Chair of
Markham Stouffville Hospital Foundation
Markham Stouffville Hospital Foundation welcomed Mark Lievonen as new Chair during its annual general meeting at Angus Glen. Mark joined the Board of Directors in 2007 and has a long track record in supporting our community. The President of Sanofi Pasteur lives in Unionville and has served on various charity boards prior to joining Markham Stouffville Hospital Foundation.
First $2,000,000 Donation for Markham Stouffville Hospital
from Liberty Development Corporation
Liberty Development Corporation contributed $2 million towards Markham Stouffville Hospital’s expansion project. Together with their families and colleagues, Liberty principals Fred Darvish, Latif Fazel and Brendan Murphy celebrated this milestone gift at a reception hosted by the Markham Stouffville Hospital Foundation.
For more than two decades, community involvement and philanthropy have been key corporate principles for Liberty Development and annually they support various organizations and causes with financial contributions. The donation to Markham Stouffville Hospital Foundation is the biggest single donation Liberty Development has made to date.
In recognition of their generous gift towards the Hospital expansion, an area within Markham Stouffville Hospital’s Emergency Department will be named the “Liberty Development Emergency Green Zone”.
