Jane Manley responds:
Weight gain occurs for many reasons. As one gets older, the body needs less calories and food. The body metabolism slows down and less food energy is required. Also, one tends to be less active. Therefore, it is important to pack as much nutrition as possible into your food choices.

Below are some tips for healthy aging and maintaining weight:
• Eat at least 3 balanced meals per day.
• Keep active. Incorporate regular physical activity into each day.
• Eat smaller portions.
• Cut down on extras like snack foods and desserts.
• Include variety in your food choices.
• Enjoy fibre from fruit, vegetables and whole grains daily.
• Cut down on fat intake.
• Consume 2-3 servings of protein such as lean meat, chicken, fish, dried peas, beans and lentils daily.
• Make sure you have calcium everyday from milk, cheese and yogurt.
• Drink 6-8 cups of liquid daily.

If you require individual counselling or nutrition advice, contact a Registered Dietitian (RD).
