Marie McLennan responds:
Falls occur due to many different factors. While it is a common occurrence among the elderly population, it is not a normal part of aging. It has been shown that older adults who remain physically active as they age are often at a lower risk for falls. Exercise and an active lifestyle help to maintain joint range of motion, muscle flexibility, and overall strength and conditioning. Conversely, with a sedentary lifestyle, individuals may experience increased difficulty in performing activities that require balance, strength and general mobility as they become de-conditioned or “out of shape”. Confidence decreases especially in new or challenging environments or situations.

Physical changes are an inevitable consequence of the aging process. However, exercise can slow this process in order to keep an active healthy lifestyle.
