Question: I have recently been diagnosed with depression and started on medication by my doctor. I’m so tired! I’ve lost interest in everything and just don’t feel like doing a thing. What can I do to help myself cope?

Nancy Day responds:
Great question! There are many people with this illness who struggle with loss of energy and diminished motivation. There are some coping strategies you can use to manage the day more productively and to help yourself feel better:

• Adhere to a routine, keeping it simple at first. Daily structure will help you cope. Add responsibilities as your activity tolerance improves.

• Try breaking down tasks that seem too daunting into smaller more manageable steps, and take a one-step-at-a-time approach. Pace yourself and take breaks if needed.

• Resist spending long periods of time in bed during the day. If you do need to nap, limit the amount of time.

• Get out of the house at least once a day. Walking is a great strategy. Physical exercise helps with your mood, attitude and energy.

• Plan to spend time with people who can be supportive and encouraging – shorten visiting time if socializing feels extremely taxing.

• Try to appreciate and take inspiration from positive things around you, e.g. nature, pets, sunshine, music, crafts, etc.

• Give yourself regular “pep talks” that include kind, supportive messages versus focusing on self-critical, discouraging thoughts.

• And lastly, be patient with yourself – it takes time to recover.
