Whether it’s a special occasion or you just don’t feel like cooking, heading out for lunch or dinner can be a lovely break from the routine. And, when you go out you expect great tasting and healthy food. A restaurant should be able to offer you and your family good food, prepared using safe food handling techniques in a smoke-free environment.

To ensure your dining experience is pleasant and healthy, look for the Eat Smart! symbol. When you see the Eat Smart! designation, you’ll also find:
• A variety of healthy food choices on the menu and by request
• Exceptional standards in food safety, including kitchen staff certified in safe food handling by the local Public Health department
• A 100% smoke-free environment

The goal of the program is to contribute to the reduction of chronic diseases (such as heart disease and cancer) and food-borne illnesses. In addition to establishing and maintaining standards at restaurants, Eat Smart! works through social marketing, education and training. Eat Smart! has partnered with provincial and community groups, restaurants, cafeterias and consumers to create healthy places for people to eat when dining out.

Eat Smart! restaurants are also listed on www.Foodinc.ca, an online directory and guide of restaurants across Canada. With over 50,000 restaurant listings Foodinc.ca represents one of the largest and most dynamic Canadian restaurant guides available online. Check out the Eat Smart! program at www.eatsmart.web.ca.
