The world HIV/AIDS crisis is the enigma that will define our generation. You and your work colleagues could make a difference by participating in a growing and exciting movement called “Give a Day to World AIDS”. Imagine giving one day’s pay and making a major impact against the greatest humanitarian tragedy of our time.
“Canadians want to help combat AIDS.... “Give a Day to World AIDS” is a simple, yet powerful way to stand with colleagues to say that you care. We can each give a day’s pay – not out of pity, but out of a passion for justice,” says Dr. Jane Philpott of the Markham Stouffville Hospital.
“Give a Day to World AIDS” was launched at MSH in 2004. Challenged by family physician Dr. Jane Philpott, 50 doctors donated a day’s income to the Stephen Lewis Foundation to ease the pain of HIV/AIDS in Africa. $33,000 was raised for an AIDS hospice in rural Zambia.
In 2005, word spread of “Give a Day to World AIDS”. Eight hospitals in Ontario ran a similar campaign, contributing over $100,000.
This year the challenge has spread from the healthcare sector and hospitals to the legal profession and into the business community. Donations are being directed to the Stephen Lewis Foundation and Dignitas International.
“This is one part of the human family responding to the broader human family. This is a day to show global solidarity; human decency and compassion,” says Philpott.
