Laser Dentistry

By Dr. Paulette Pillersdorf

If your dental treatment could be delivered in a faster, more comfortable, more comprehensive manner, would you be interested? Yes? Then you are part of the growing demographic for whom LASER dentistry was developed.

LASER is an acronym for Light Amplification for Stimulated Emission of Radiation.

LASER technology is a scientific marvel offering broad based applications in medicine, dentistry and industry. You may be familiar with LASER cutters, pointers, printers, hair removal, skin resurfacing, tattoo removal and eye surgery. The specialized light generated by the LASER has been proven to be even more precise and sensitive than a scalpel.

In dentistry, the LASER has revolutionized the care of patients. Researched and refined over the last 25 years, LASERs are delivering safe, consistent, comfortable results for a wide range of dental treatment. LASER dentistry allows dentists to do more in less time achieving higher calibre results. LASERs can be used to treat teeth, bone, gum tissue and other soft tissues of the mouth. Some LASERs are specialized for a particular procedure – others can switch from hard to soft tissue with a simple adjustment.

Gentle, conservative and coagulating, the LASER can be used for decay removal, periodontal pocket treatment, crown lengthening, cosmetic enhancements, gum tissue contouring, smile whitening, cold and canker sore healing and pain relief, TMD treatment and many other procedures.

What does it mean for you?

More comfortable visits. Most patients just don’t like the noise or vibration associated with the “drill.” A LASER is different. It delivers treatment by using a combination of LASER energy and water without ever touching your tooth.

Less need for anaesthetic. Using the LASER, many procedures can be completed without anaesthetic (a needle) which means you won’t leave the dental office with that “frozen” feeling or be unable to eat until the anaesthetic
wears off.

Faster and fewer visits. Without having to wait for anaesthetic to take effect, your treatment can be completed faster. And more treatment can be completed in one visit so you spend less time at the dentist.

Faster healing. When used on gum tissue around a tooth, blood vessels are cauterized or “sealed,” minimizing bleeding and post-op swelling while producing superior cosmetic results in less time.

Healthier mouth. For those with gum disease, the LASER destroys pathogenic micro-organisms that thrive in periodontal pockets and can contour the gum line to support soft tissue re-attachment.

LASER dentistry is improving the patient experience in many ways delivering better results in less time with no additional cost – definitely something to smile about!
