Caution: Dentures Over Five Years Old!
If you have been wearing the same denture for more than five years without having it checked by your denturist, you are running unnecessary risks. Too many people believe that dentures are good for 20 years or more. Nothing could be further from the truth!
The dentures are made of hard, rigid materials; your face, mouth and jaw, on the other hand, change over the years. Because it cannot adapt to these changes and because artificial teeth wear down with time, a denture cannot do its job effectively for more than five years. This reality can sometimes have devastating effects that cannot be seen or felt by someone who wears old, worn-out dentures.
Here is a short list of the harmful possible consequences of old, ill-fitting dentures:
• softening of the tissues
• painful, irritated tissues
• more laborious chewing and difficult digestion
• headaches, earaches, neck pain and joint problems
• extra wrinkles around mouth
• accelerated resorption (shrinkage) of the jaw bone
•breakdown of denture materials resulting in bacteria build-up and
discoloration
