You probably know too much sugar is bad for your teeth, but do you know why? The bacteria in our mouths converts sugar to acid which erodes tooth enamel. So avoid sugary foods and fizzy drinks. You’ll not just help protect your teeth – you’ll cut down on empty calories as well!
Swap sugary snacks for a fresh apple or pear. It will help you achieve your five-a-day fruit and vegetable target, while the extra chewing required will get rid of any food bits stuck in your teeth and exercise your gums.
Top up your meals with plenty of fresh vegetables. They’re low in sugar and fat, and contain the various vitamins and minerals you need for healthy teeth.
Go easy on dried fruits and fruit juices. They may appear healthy – and in moderation they are - but they are also high in sugar.
Cut down on alcohol which contains empty calories and excess sugar, especially if you use soft drinks as mixers. Too much booze can also trigger mouth cancer.
To maintain your fluid intake, drink plenty of water, as well as milk, and tea without sugar.
Remember that smoking, as well as too much wine, tea and coffee can all discolour your teeth.
If you chew gum, choose one that contains xylitol, a sugar substitute that some experts believe may even reduce the risk of cavities.
Watch out for foods labelled ‘sugar-free.’ Many contain sugar replacements and other types of sweeteners, so read the label carefully.
And as everyone knows, brush your teeth at least twice a day, floss at least once a day, never go to bed without brushing your teeth and visit your dentist twice a year.
